WMS Project: Frogger

Time Frame: 1.5 weeks (6-days total) in December

Class: Mr. Hobbs Math/Mrs. Hall-Huz Science grade 7

Objective: During the unit, students will learn how to gain and apply computational thinking by using the AgentSheets software to create a basic yet complete and functional "Frogger" game.

Standards: ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) NETS (National Educational Technology Standards):

  • 1a apply existing knowledge to generate new products
  • 1b create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
  • 4b plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.
  • 4d use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions.
  • 6c troubleshoot systems and applications.
  • 2a interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.
  • 2d contribute to project teams to produce original works

Materials:

  • Student laptops with AgentSheets installed
  • Teacher laptop with AgentSheets installed and projector availability
  • Internet access for each computer

Schedule outline:

  • Day 1
    • Unit overview – intro, grading (rubric), and goals
    • Brief intro to AgentSheets software and tutorials on the wiki
    • Start new project (Frogger), show "typical" game setup
    • Create frog agent and worksheet
    • Create behavior to make frog move in 4 directions – run.
    • Extra time – refine frog design or read ahead in tutorial
  • Day 2
    • Quick review of what has been accomplished
    • Create and add streets and truck agents
    • Program trucks to move on the road from left to right – run.
    • Create tunnel agents to fix car stacks
    • Program generation and absorption of cars - run
    • Extra time – refine street/car design or read ahead in tutorial
  • Day 3
    • Quick review of what has been accomplished
    • Create dead frog agent
    • Program collision of frog and truck with sound and frog change – run.
    • Create water and log agent (mimics road and trucks)
    • Program logs to move on water from left to right – run. (mimics trucks)
    • Create bridge agents and program them to generate/absorb logs – run. (mimics tunnels)
    • Extra time – refine agent designs or read ahead in tutorial
  • Day 4
    • Quick review of what has been accomplished
    • Transport computational thinking pattern – use model
    • Program frog and log transportation – run.
    • Catch-up students that may have fallen behind and those that are done help others
    • Check for understanding
  • Day 5
    • Quick review of what has been accomplished
    • Create turtle agent
    • Program turtles to move on water from right to left – run. (reverse of trucks)
    • Create palm tree agents and program them to generate/absorb turtles – run. (reverse of tunnels)
    • Program frogs to transport on turtles – run.
    • Check for understanding
    • Extra time – refine agent designs and finalize game details
  • Day 6
    • Quick review of what has been accomplished
    • Wrap-up and finalize all game details
    • Upload/Turn-in final copy of game
    • Play other uploaded games
